How To Create A Group In Domain_6

How to create a domain Group

A group domain is used:

  • to permanently classify or slice a map with a value domain, or
  • to classify values in a column.

A domain Group lists the upper value boundaries of the groups and the output group names. For ILWIS 1.4 users: a group domain acts as a classify table.

Tip:

To interactively slice an image or to interactively classify a map, you can create a new representation value or gradual. For more information, see How to slice an image and How to classify a map.

To create a group domain:

  • from the File menu in the Main window, choose the Create Domain command, or
  • in the Operation-list, double-click the New Domain item.

In the Create Domain dialog box which follows:

  • select the Class option, and
  • select the Group check box.

The Domain Group editor is opened:

  • Add groups to the domain by selecting Add Item from the Edit menu, or by pressing the Ins key on the keyboard;
  • In the appearing Add Domain Item dialog box, specify the upper boundary value for this group, the output group name, and optionally a code for the output group name.

Note:

  • In output group names, any characters may be used, except percentages %.
  • In codes for output groups, any characters may be used, except colons : and percentages %.

Example:

To slice or classify a map with slope values that range from 0 to 200% into 5 relief classes as Flat (0-2%), Undulating (2-8%), Rolling (8-16%), Hilly (16-30%), Mountainous (>30%) (FAO), the following domain Group can be created:

Upper
Boundary

Group Name

2

Flat

8

Undulating

16

Rolling

30

Hilly

200

Mountainous

To apply the group domain:

To classify values in a map, use the Slicing operation or use the CLFY function in MapCalc. The operation and the function produce the same results.

To classify values in a column, use the CLFY function in TabCalc.

For more information, see How to classify a map or column.

To edit the representation of (a map with) a group domain:

When you create a group domain, also a representation is created with the same name as the domain. You can edit the colors of the output groups, i.e. classes, by choosing Representation from the Edit menu in the domain editor, or by opening the representation from the Catalog.

When you have displayed your output raster map in a map window, you can also choose the Representation command from the Edit menu in the map window:

  • The Representation Class editor is opened;
  • Modify the colors of the output classes;
  • Keep the editor window open and switch to the map window;
  • In the map window, press the Redraw button ;
  • Switch to the Representation Class editor and continue to modify colors;
  • Switch to the map window to redraw the map, until satisfied.
